A generalized additive model for time-series was fitted to examine the association between mortality and daily air pollutants. A National Air Quality Objective (National Ambient Air Quality Standard) was used to assess the risk associated with current levels of air pollution in these cities. We found a negative association between mortality and air pollutants in Rome, although the association in Barcelona was positive. Moreover, air pollutants were associated with a significant excess of respiratory, ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases in Barcelona and a significant excess of respiratory diseases and ischaemic heart disease in London. These associations were most noticeable during the cold season. We found that the Italian standard of air pollution is exceeded in the three cities. The current levels of air pollution in these cities may contribute to an additional 350-450 deaths a year. These results indicate that exposure to outdoor air pollutants is associated with premature mortality, particularly in the winter season.By Paul Rincon
