How to Use Layers in Photoshop: A Step-by-Step Example
A layer is a collection of elements that can be moved around on a layer, changed in size, and colored, changed in opacity, and reflected in other layers and vectors.
A single photo can contain multiple layers.
Layers are Photoshop’s way of combining multiple elements together.
When you add text to a layer, it displays on top. When you move or resize a layer, it also moves up or down on its layer. Layers work by layering everything on top of one another so you can change any element individually, manipulate it, and then add it to another layer to create unique designs.
Step 1. Open Photoshop
Open Photoshop CS3 or higher and click the “File” menu and select “New.” Click the “Photoshop” menu and select “Photoshop Elements” so you can open the Photoshop Elements program.

3. Brush Settings
Once you have selected a brush in your Brush panel, you can control the settings for its size, shape, intensity, and opacity. If you are using a color that’s too bright or color that’s too dark, you can simply change its brightness or darkness value in your brightness/contrast dialog box. If you want to erase, you can do so with a straight, curved, or ellipse shape. You can also use a rubber eraser to remove paint or do larger, more pronounced effects like removing hair, or retouching hair or eye lashes.

Ink brushes have an area in the color range of black and white that can be used to make an outline. They are best for outlining, making outlines or for adding an iris effect.
6. Layer Brushes
You can paint on a variety of layers or groups of layers.
7. Masks
Masks are used for photo editing to add elements like the face of a friend or objects. By painting over a canvas, you can edit with the mask as well as those features. You can create an entire image in masks.
8. Paper Brushes
Paper brushes are a great way to create drawings or paint effects. By using an airbrush, you can add watercolors, stencils, and even spray paint to a piece of canvas.
