# Using layer masks to save time and keep your images looking sharp
As we’ve mentioned, Photoshop’s work area is divided into various areas called _layers_. The layers can be rearranged and duplicated to create multiple identical images. You can use layer masks to enable you to quickly and easily manipulate an image without the need for a potentially time-consuming erase or fill and then hit the Erase button.
A _layer mask_ is a little square that you insert in the lower-left corner of a layer. When you switch to the Layers palette (choose Window ⇒ Layers to open the palette), a layer mask appears in the lower-left corner of the layer’s thumbnail. The lower-right edge of the layer mask is in the lower-right corner of the layer thumbnail. If you click and drag the layer mask to the left, it deletes the mask from the layer.
Any kind of selection or group of selections (for example, an adjustment layer, a clone stamp, or the three-point selection for masking) can be used to mask out areas. The mask that appears is usually a rectangle that obscures the layer’s entire area.
To create a mask, select Layer Mask by right-clicking the layer’s thumbnail and choosing Layer Mask from the menu. The mask may be a filled area or a transparent area. To control the type of mask you create, click the Layer Mask button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the palette, shown in Figure 15-2. You can then select a mask type — either a black-and-white mask or a color mask.

Open Office 3.4 is out, and with it comes the new Semantic Desktop. I look at it as a brand new toolset for use in educational environments. How do I measure the length of a string in terms of number of chars in a C++ program?
I’m writing a program that has a series of functions for aardvark collection. The function that handles the collection type is supposed to take a string, and return either ‘aardvark’ or ‘platypus’.
Since this is a class project, the student should be able to write their own function to handle the collection type.
I want to use the length of the string as a return for the return type. This way I can keep the functions focused on the job they are supposed to do.
I can use std::string as a return type, but I can’t compare it to ‘aardvark’ or ‘platypus’. I don’t want to return ‘aardvark’ if the length of the string is more than 12, or ‘platypus’ if the length is more than 4.
I tried using some char arrays for these, but that didn’t work. I’m fairly new to programming, so it could be a simple mistake that I’m missing.
