Lymphocyte infiltration into tumors is often greater than what can be accounted for by metastatic spread. Lymphocytes are known to be recruited to tumors under the influence of interferon-gamma, interleukin-2, and other cytokines. However, the present paper shows, in C3H/HeN mice, that an injection of Staphylococcus aureus peptidoglycan caused an inhibition of the growth of the tumor. Lymphocyte infiltration into the tumor was remarkably decreased and the lymphocytes in the spleen were greatly reduced by peptidoglycan treatment. The condition of the lymphocytes in the spleen was comparable with that in the tumor-bearing mice injected with peptidoglycan. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the proportion of sub-G1 DNA-positive cells, indicative of the cells undergoing apoptosis, were significantly increased in the peptidoglycan treated groups. The present study thus demonstrated that administration of peptidoglycan led to the disappearance of lymphocytes within the tumor and the spleen and that the proportion of apoptotic cells in the spleen was inversely proportional to the number of lymphocytes in the spleen.. To some extent, this is because the contribution of the Jahn-Teller effect to the SHG from the 2e shell of Ir is weak due to the smallness of the quadrupole moment, while it is strong for the 3e shell in.
