“It’s the fact that we’re still talking about this, and we’re still debating,” he said. “It’s a sign that these problems are very, very important.”
It’s not all good news. The report also showed that 2010 was likely to be the hottest on record, with no improvements in the level of greenhouse gas emissions.
The world has been warming because of the buildup of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, primarily carbon dioxide and methane, and the release of those gases from industrial activities such as burning oil and coal.
If the emissions stayed constant, the report says, the average temperature would rise by 3.3 degrees Celsius between now and 2050. But if emissions continued to climb, the average would likely reach 4.8 degrees Celsius, still at levels that experts say pose a threat to human civilization.
The report says the amount of annual carbon dioxide emissions from the world’s 500 top polluters, which includes the United States, China, Russia, India, Japan and the European Union, would need to drop by at least 15 percent for the planet to
