Jose Raul Cano pleaded guilty in May to three counts of aggravated murder and other charges that included theft and kidnapping in the killings of the 21-month-old girl and her mother in May. His attorney, John Dowd, said before sentencing that his client admitted the crimes but contends he is innocent.
Cano faced life imprisonment without parole when the case got to trial in October after the state Supreme Court last year ruled that Ohio’s death penalty system was unconstitutional because it did not require a mandatory life sentence for murder committed in the course of kidnapping, aggravated robbery or aggravated rape.
