## Introducing Levels
Photoshop Elements offers a variety of channels, including Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, Gradient Map, and a Selective Color tool. Each channel gives you the ability to modify certain areas of an image.
A channel refers to the properties of a color or a black-and-white image, and a channel contains channels of color, black-and-white, or transparency (the last being a new feature in Photoshop Elements 11). Figure 4-2 shows the Edit→Colors panel of the image shown in Figure 4-1 with all channels displayed.

In Figure 4-2, the top row shows the Hue/Saturation channel, the middle row shows the Gradient Map channel, and the bottom row shows the Levels channel with a setting of 20.
## Modifying with a Channel
When you’re working with a channel, you can view the contents in the RGB and CMYK color models. This enables you to apply colors and adjustments via the channel-based controls.
One problem that often occurs in the Gradient Map channel is that the gradient doesn’t appear at all in the first few steps of the gradient-making process. You must keep clicking the Create Gradient button to move to the next step. This is caused by an issue with the display of the color model, which is described in the nearby sidebar. The Gradient Map channel also has some problems with opacity and transparency values.
The Levels channel offers the best and most complete control for modifying or creating a black-and-white image, as it allows you to control specific areas of an image in a way that you can’t do in other channels.
