You can use a collections.Counter to see if a substring is one substring from the others in the list, and then, once you have the list of “consecutive” substrings, simply filter them out like this:

2-Deoxy-2-(18)fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is an effective means of detecting recurrence in patients treated for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. However, there is inherent interference from FDG activity in surrounding soft tissues in the oral cavity and nasopharynx. The aim of this study was to investigate this inherent interference in patients with recurrent head and neck cancer who had undergone radiation therapy. Retrospectively, the data from 23 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who had developed evidence of recurrence during long-term follow-up who had undergone radiation therapy and had undergone PET/CT were studied. The mean interval between radiotherapy and PET/CT was 73 +/- 62 days. PET/CT images were evaluated for patterns of recurrence in the head and neck by a single radiologist and a referring physician. Positron-emitting activity was recorded from the oral cavity, nasopharynx, and skull in the PET images. Location of the activity was then compared with the CT images, and the presence or absence of reaction in the oral cavity was recorded. There were 12 patients with recurrence in the oral cavity, 6 in the nasopharynx, and 5 in the skull. Recurrence could be documented in the lesion in 11 of the 23 patients. Patients with facial invasion (n = 15) had a lower rate of radiation-induced artifactual activity in the oral cavity (8 of 15, 53.3%) than patients without facial invasion (23 of 28, 82.1%) (p = 0.037). Radiation-induced artifactual activity in the oral cavity is more common in patients with a poor facial appearance.Spread the love
