Nuance’s $400 million acquisition of competitor AlchemyAPI has already spooked a lot of smaller companies that use natural language processing to create a human-like voice in text-based conversations.

Many of those companies are moving away from their Silicon Valley headquarters or have put their staffers on unpaid leave.

“I think there’s a lot of fear. I think all of us are in a bit of a holding pattern,” said Tim Legler, chief executive of Tappit, a startup that lets users listen to queries via audio and video.

Tappit now has a noncompete clause that bars new customers from using either AlchemyAPI or Nuance, forcing it to contemplate a pivot.

“It’s very disruptive,” said Mr. Legler, whose company just raised $1.2 million in a seed round from the venture arms of two big unions, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Communication Workers of America, which has since invested in a handful of the startups on the natural language processing block, including DialogTech and HelloGiggles.

“All of a sudden, people have to be thinking about what they’re doing — are they pivoting?” he said. “It could be a game changer.”

It’s not just smaller startups feeling the financial pain from the deal.

AlchemyAPI’s cloud products — which rival Nuance’s offering of speech recognition and other natural language-based technology — “attracted a lot of AI research that funded a lot of universities,” said Guy Soloway, who teaches a class on machine learning at Stanford University and is an adviser to the university’s AI-focused robotics lab.

“Suddenly, the companies that are huge are taking these products and buying them, but the smaller ones that are hiring research assistants and the young researchers are, like, ‘What am I going to do?’” he said.
