Pneumococcal infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the immunocompromised host, and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is a major cause of mortality in HIV-infected adults in the developed world. Understanding of the pathogenesis of bacterial infections, including of the mucosal surfaces where the initial events of pneumococcal colonization and infection occur, is limited because of the difficulty of working with this organism. We have used a number of techniques including confocal microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and the use of transgenic mice to establish that the pneumococcal cell surface proteins, including C-polysaccharide, serotype-specific surface proteins, and neuraminidase are all strongly recognized by secreted IgA of the mucosal immune system. Furthermore, IgA-dependent activities specific for the same proteins mediate a barrier effect within the nasopharynx. The antigens appear to be degraded by IgA-mediated reactions and localized to the mucus layer, which we suggest may function to prevent adherence and multiplication of bacteria by reducing the access of bacteria to the cellular surface. We have also identified the S. pneumoniae strain-specific surface proteins RrgA, RrgB, RrgC and RrgD, that appear to enable the bacteria to evade IgA-mediated mucosal immunity. We propose that mucosal IgA constitutes a first line of defense against colonizing S. pneumoniae and mediates its first line of defense against colonization by S. pneumoniae by controlling access of the bacterium to epithelial cells.Initial report of Caralegin-A in neuropsychiatry: a preliminary Phase II, single-blind trial in patients with dementia.

Hello, i’m hoping to get some info about the film “Brigadoon and the Hooley”
For those who are not aware of it, this is a 17 minute film shot in 1911. The film features Brigadoon and the Hooley in a Glasgow tenement area around Hogmanay 1912.
The film is in color and was most likely shot by the Bridgeton Photographic Studio.
It was made from a photo, how ever the details from the film have been kept.
It also included a charming Glamis Castle and Roslin Castle.
When i watched the flick i seen the castle in it and i was left unsure where in Glasgow they were. After a while of watching it, i figured this is where they are. this is
Edinburgh, due to the hosmans and general nature of the hosman costumes i figured that it was about the hosman district. The cinema, that i saw it, was on boarfield street.
