Battle of Goodrich Mountain
The Battle of Goodrich Mountain was a battle in southwestern West Virginia, fought in October 1864 by Union forces advancing towards the Kanawha Valley, and Confederate forces that guarded the vital Mine Fork Mountain to their rear.
Background
In the summer of 1864, an expedition led by Union General Philip H. Sheridan sought to pursue and capture Confederate forces under General John C. Breckinridge from the pivotal area of the Kanawha Valley. Having crossed into West Virginia via the Gauley and Kanawha Rivers, Sheridan set his sights on the strategically important Mine Fork Mountain and the Kanawha River Gorge. The campaign began on August 22 and by September 9, Union forces were victorious at the Battle of Dog Spring Mountain.
The Goodrich Mountain country area was occupied by a Confederate brigade that consisted of the 12th and 15th Georgia Infantry, the 17th and 18th Georgia Infantry, and the 3rd and 17th West Virginia Infantry. In an attempt to impede the Union advance, Confederate forces constructed a line of picket posts along the crest of the Goodrich Mountain. During the Battle of Goodrich Mountain, Confederate forces were able to repel repeated Union attacks. The Union forces were finally successful after using heavy artillery to breach the Confederates’ defensive line.
Battle
In mid-October, Union forces had reached the base of the mountain and set up camp to await the arrival of Union artillery that would be sent to support the attack. After 3 days of bombardment by the Union artillery, Confederate forces withdrew to a prepared position in the Crowder’s Run Valley, a small defile near the present-day town of Coal Grove, West Virginia. Since Confederate forces had been unable to hold the northern slope of the mountain, General Sheridan ordered his forces to move forward into the Crowder’s Run Valley, and begin to construct a line of trenches to fill the gap in the Confederate defenses.
On October 21, Union forces advanced into the valley and captured the river crossing at Coal Run, and advanced to the top of the mountain, where the Confederates made up a line of defense. Heavy rains made it necessary for the Confederates to establish a perimeter along the Coal Run Stream. To the west, the Union lines stretched up and down the valley, from Coal Run to the river, and then a serpentine line of entrenchments and pontoon bridges were constructed across the stream. It was a complex line of entrenchments
