Habitat loss and increased predation by humans and increasing competition from species introduced from Europe for nest and prey sites are likely factors that have contributed to the population decline of the West African gold-green Swainson's Falcon (Falco hyperythrus).

A study of the Western Swainson’s Falcon population in Liberia reported by Guy G. Manojlovic to present at the 90th annual meeting of the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is putting the western Swainson’s Falcon in the limelight. Manojlovic reported that a review of the scientific literature revealed that the West African hawk species had a population of maybe 10,000 pairs across Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors proposed that the western Swainson’s falcon population may have been stable for the past seven years, but was now declining due to increasing human pressures.
