When Bayard’s men went on strike he took no action to deal with it. He was on the Cote d’Or in the south, while his old age rapidly approached, and he left the army and retired to Rothenburg im Taunus.

In Paris Napoleon’s armies ceased to operate under the monarchy. The royal army still existed in name, passing constantly through Paris on parade while the mass of soldiers in the interior provinces lived on pay cuts by double the rate allowed under the constitution. Taxes increased and so did the money needed to pay out the regimental officers. At the same time the loyalties of priests and peasants were lost to the oppressive Napoleonic government, which began to rule France by imprisoning citizens for non-attendance at mass or even reading the Bible. Not until July 1822, just six years before Queen Caroline Bonaparte’s assassination, was the message delivered to Parisian priests and farmers:

At the time that the story of Death end re;Quest begins, the world is divided into two: one is the Golden Age, the other is the Silver Age. The Golden Age was a time of peace and happiness, while the Silver Age is a time of war and fear.
