There are a few species of wildflowers in fields that deserve special recognition because of their unique combination of characteristics. Some of these plants have been naturalized around the world and are providing fertile nurseries for themselves as well as food for small animals such as the house mouse. Asters

These perennials are annuals only in the wild. Most aster plants are native to southern and mid-western North America as well as Europe where they quickly became cultivated for their nourishing seeds. Some bushy varieties have become established in yards around much of North America.

Daisy Family

The daisies are the best cultivated family of wildflowers in North America. These perennials are actually about 3,000 species of flowers and fruits native to the Americas and Mexico, eastern Asia, Europe, Central Asia, south Asia and southern Africa. They are also known as the Compositae (a Latin and scientific term meaning “compound flower”) because they consist of individual flowers with a rounded, upcurved flower head containing a center of small yellow or purplish florets surrounded by smaller white or pink florets.

Leafy Aster

Leafy aster are about 2-4″ tall and 1-6″ wide and grow nearly all year in the wild and are native to central and eastern North America, the eastern part of Canada and much of Siberia in far north eastern Asia. These plants are tolerant of light shade and drought and they are a favorite of our native black and mountain loveniline. Leafy aster have the habit of spreading dense clumps that spontaneously self-seed and are usually what attracted you to a field. It is a pleasant surprise when one of your self-seeders looks for all the world like it is part of the native plant community.

Cloudless Aster

Cloudless aster are native to the southeastern United States and Mexico as well as northern Central America. They are so called because these darlings have a distinctive shape–their flower heads are covered with a clear dome where the petals of the flower will not appear, but, perversely, the pollen-bearing anthers show through the clear cover of the flower. That part of the race was so interesting to watch. It was not only a run of perfectly executed aggressive driving, it was almost genius when she beat Jimmie back there, then let him get back past, and had it absolutely nailed when she had to go back into the lead group and beat him back there. She looked exhausted, and all of that was combined with the fact that her heart was almost too big for her body.

I thought her timing and positioning were perfect. She was in the lead pack, but always had a fast car and a clear track for her to work with. She positioned herself right through the final turn, got back to the leaders early, and then stayed there just long enough to bait her pursuers and get the gap she needed.

Micheale’s strategy was clever, but maybe a little risky. Not very aggressive, but not nearly as hesitant as she usually is in moments of high stress. She just had a perfect balance of factors.

Speaking of elements of beauty, Jimmie had a perfect element of beauty. A perfect blend of mechanical engineering and perfect taste. The 4-cylinder left engine was gorgeous, shining in the sun. The top-up sheet-metal framework was indescribably beautiful.

He seemed to be having trouble with his right rear tire, and he lost traction quite often. But he kept beating Lance at the end, and it was amazing to watch.

I just wondered why they were having such a hard time on that right rear. Did either of the tires fade away or was it just really bad?

I think that’s it. 1. I think that Micheale’s car was probably just a bit “less-than-spectacular”. That probably played a factor.
