The Discovery of Extinction is a non-fiction book by David M. Raup and Jonathan B. Bird, published in 1991. The book contains the first truly comprehensive record of the geological history of the Earth. Their findings were revolutionary and allowed the creation of large-scale geologic time scales. Raup and Bird published a paper describing their ideas for the book in 1989, and the book came out in 1991. The first edition was published by Princeton University Press and is now available in hardcover and paperback.
Summary
“Extinction” refers to the loss of species from the face of the Earth. Raup and Bird argued that extinction is a natural process that is necessary to create new evolutionary niches and, thereby, keep population sizes constant. Over vast periods of geologic time, the ancestors of terrestrial animals living today went extinct, and the same is true of the ancestors of marine animals living today.
The book is organized into four parts. In Part I, the authors discuss the concepts of time and space. Part II is a detailed and comprehensive history of life. In Part III, the authors discuss the causes of extinction. Part IV contains brief summaries of the geologic histories of land, sea, and a brief discussion of dinosaurs.
