Rebel Inc. is a new kind of war game. That’s a pretty big promise, but it checks out. First of all, Rebel Inc: Escalation is a great game. It’s easy to learn, without any jargon, and intuitive, so you can jump in at almost any point, right away. There’s no messing around here. If you want to feel like a modern day warlord, Rebel Inc. is your game.
Secondly, the game is visually pretty impressive. I was impressed by the fact that every faction and unit I was playing as looked and felt like a fighter. It’s the little details in Rebel Inc. that really make it stand out; in the opening sequence, you watch government and insurgent forces maneuver in the same space, without the NATO ships or US ground forces impacting on each other. This may not sound like a major achievement, but I was super impressed by the attention to detail.
The real draw of Rebel Inc. is its massive campaign map, which gives the game depth, but is also big enough for a game of 40-60 minutes, depending on your skill. Having watched this game for the past week and a half, I suspect that’s all you’re going to get out of Rebel Inc. as well. It’s a nice, long, leisurely campaign that gives you the chance to really experience what happens when you push/pivot/retreat back and forth over an entire conflict.
This is an alternative to Rebellion’s (with David Heath) Wargame of the Year, and with Wargame of the Year, you get it for £26 on Steam, or £19.99 on the original PC CD.
But, Rebel Inc: Escalation has one more trick up its sleeve. You’ll have to wait until the official release date to see what that is. For
