Not only is the image familiar, but it is also very beautiful, and it has become a staple of artistic expression. The origins of this image, however, are not so straightforward.
The first major European artist to create this image of a praying woman was Jan van Eyck in 1434. But the image became popular, and was reproduced in numerous media, at a point when most people didn’t know its origin.
A part of the mystery surrounding this painting is the identity of the young child praying. He is thought to be either Jan’s son John or his nephew Henry, but scholars still don’t know for certain who he is.
When this image came to the attention of the artist Hieronymus Bosch in 1490, he took it as a challenge to create an image that was equal to that of Van Eyck’s.

Bosch’s version of this theme includes a female figure that is almost identical to the Madonna, the boy, and the dog. In fact, he has actually incorporated the legend of Saint Martin into the work. The legend tells the story of a miller’s wife named Helga who, by giving her cloak to a stranger, is able to have a son who will grow up to be St. Martin.
Bosch’s painting was highly influential and brought the painting of a Madonna with child to a whole new level. The painting, which was commissioned in 1490, was displayed in the “Hall of Sint John and Elisabeth” in the “Bosch Chapel” of the El Escorial monastery.
