AutoCAD’s main design goal is to help users create their own original designs. The company describes this functionality as the “power of CAD to Design”, and the software has been compared to Inventor and Creo in the manner of its design philosophy. AutoCAD versions prior to 2015 are only able to read and write drawings made in AutoCAD, whereas AutoCAD 2015 and above can import and export data to and from popular drawing file formats, including DWG and DXF, as well as native AutoCAD files. AutoCAD 2015 and above also includes an optional Microsoft Windows-based operating system and remote desktop protocol that can be used to connect to and control an AutoCAD application running on a remote computer from any other computer running Windows, macOS, or Unix. AutoCAD 2015 and above also includes support for the Windows 8 and Windows 10 tablet operating systems. The software has been extensively ported to several platforms, including SunOS, Android, Symbian, Linux, and OS X.
Additional features available as part of Autodesk Advanced function packs include the use of parametric and multivariable constraints, parametric curves, parametric surfaces, dynamic block libraries, and “Auto Solver”, which creates and automatically documents parallel algorithms for optimal assembly of mechanical parts. Additional functionality that is available as part of Autodesk Ultimate or Ultimate Design function packs includes the use of 3D modeling tools and the ability to import and export data to and from Creo, Inventor, and Catia.
