McDermott, who was the branch chief for the agency’s Newport Beach office, was the subject of an investigation by the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health into an employee complaint that McDermott sent and received nude photos of herself to her ex-boyfriend and his colleagues, CNN reported.

The complaint was sent to McDermott’s boss, also the head of the agency, for action, the OC Register reported. The agency has not confirmed that McDermott’s death is related to the probe.

McDermott’s sister told NBC 4 New York that her death was a suicide.

In an email to NBC News, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said it had “no official information about the circumstances of McDermott’s death.”

The complaint referred to the coworker as her “ex-boyfriend,” the California newspaper reported.

McDermott had no police record, NBC 4 New York reported.

According to her LinkedIn profile, McDermott began work in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in February 2005, and had worked at the agency for a little more than a year.

The agency, which is part of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, is charged with managing the state’s fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds, according to its website.
