With AutoCAD 2018, we are changing the way we do AutoCAD!
In response to user feedback, we are moving the ability to create a 2D drawing to the Editor module. Clicking the New Draw or Pushbutton icon on the toolbar (or pressing Enter) will bring up the Editor with the AutoCAD Work Area. This is a 2D environment where you can create the 2D drawing you desire.
In addition, we have moved the tools for 2D drawing, including measurement tools and snap modes, to the ribbon, so you can access them more quickly.
To access the existing functions associated with a 2D drawing, including commands for drawing and annotation, right-click on the drawing or activate the drawing in the Windows taskbar.
While the Editor has been extended for 2D drawings, the philosophy is that the 2D drawing should only be used as a way to edit your AutoCAD drawings. It does not have the capability to execute AutoCAD commands. So, you can go back and forth from the 2D drawing to your AutoCAD drawings as needed, without losing any of your work.
Of course, it is still possible to create or open AutoCAD files from the 2D drawing. If you choose, you can even save your drawing in.dwg format so that you can open and view the drawing in AutoCAD.
For your existing 2D drawings, we have also added a new option to the Read command, the Read 2D option. The Read 2D option is the same as Read 2D, except that it loads the drawing from the 2D drawing. You can choose to read the entire 2D drawing or just the 2D drawing area.
To help you work with 2D drawings, we have also updated the Autodesk Clipboard to support 2D drawings. The Clipboard history and context menu have been enhanced with more 2D drawing options.
Finally, to help you work with 2D drawings, we have also added a new 2D Profile. With a 2D profile, you can have multiple profiles of a drawing to manage and load and save to the 2D drawing. The 2D profile can be separate from your profile and can be loaded in addition to your other profiles. You can use the 2D profile when you are working in the Editor and select the 2D drawing.
