A sex-sorter firm received the all-clear from the Central government to produce a product that can help eliminate the country’s sex ratio imbalance by calculating the number of ‘missing’ girls and boys.
The production of ‘GharBHogi’, which literally means girl-boy, was cleared by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Friday after the ministry decided to allow some “social welfare” product to be made as long as it was “not harmful to human life”.
The ministry, which is headed by the prime minister, also said that GharBHogi would not be listed on the government’s website.
The ministry did not specify how many ‘missing’ girls and boys would be expected from the GharBHogi production. But the Indian Express quoted a government source as saying that the maximum population of ‘missing’ boys was expected to be around 60-70 lakh, while the maximum number of ‘missing’ girls was expected to be around 30-40 lakh.
The number would depend on the figures provided by the sex ratio of various states, which are not yet available, the source added.
In 2010, the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had said that there was no solution to the sex ratio imbalance in India, and it was because of “dynastic marriages”.
The idea of sex-sorting is based on the premise that more boys are born than girls in India due to the dowry tradition, especially in the north-east, and they are usually abandoned.
The sex-sorter company is located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and is one of the three firms that won the government tender to produce the sex-sorter.
