The practical solution to this problem has been the use of airborne or satellite-borne multispectral sensors and/or radar sensors which are capable of producing a large number of narrow spectral channels, which may be digitized into a contiguous digital image or a mosaic of images. The success of this approach depends on the availability of suitable sensors, and the need for the necessary high data rates over limited bandwidths. As a result, data compression methods are becoming increasingly important.
A problem with the approach of using a single multispectral sensor or radar is that, to cover an area of interest, the swath width is so great that it would be too slow and too expensive to fly or orbit a sensor over the area. To this extent, an approach known as Multiple Look Array (MLA) has been developed, in which multiple sensors or sets of sensors produce a number of narrow range images in which the pixels of each image are at different locations in the array. These separate images can then be added together to produce a contiguous wideband image. In a particular application of such a system, the sensors have been set up to be mounted on a single aircraft, which flies over the area of interest at a speed such that each sensor or set of sensors completes an individual scan of the area of interest. Once each scan is complete, the data is collected and stored. The multiple scans may then be later processed in the same way as a single sweep of the aircraft.
