AutoCAD History AutoCAD was first released on the Apple II in December 1982, one of the earliest examples of a commercial CAD application. In 1984, AutoCAD was released for the CP/M operating system on Digital Equipment Corporation’s VAX minicomputer. In 1990, AutoCAD Version 1.0 was released for PC DOS. AutoCAD for Mac OS X was released in 2012. AutoCAD 2012 and its successors AutoCAD LT (1998) and AutoCAD MEP (2017) are successors to Version 1.0. AutoCAD and other Autodesk applications are distributed through two primary channels: the AutoCAD App Store and Autodesk’s software as a service (SaaS) model. From 2012 to 2014, AutoCAD was also available for iPad via Apple’s App Store. However, Autodesk removed AutoCAD and related products from the App Store in 2014. AutoCAD’s mobile apps for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone were added to the Autodesk App Store and Microsoft Store in 2014. AutoCAD LT was discontinued in 2007. AutoCAD MEP was discontinued in 2018.
AutoCAD LT was designed to run on the 1980s “fat” Apple II and IBM PC/XT with a newly developed graphics core that used 48Kb of RAM (memory) instead of the more typical 128Kb or 256Kb. AutoCAD is the second of the five commercial CAD products that Autodesk offers. The first was AutoCAD Level II, a vector-graphics tool released in 1981. The third CAD product, Draw, was released in 1985, followed by a suite of more affordable (starting at $2,500) packages, including DrawPlus (1986), Drawing (1988), and AutoCAD (1982). While Autodesk was not the first company to develop software for PCs, Autodesk was perhaps the first company to really market a product as the killer app for PCs.
