I want to expand the number of factors in a Factor. If I use expand(), it keeps the levels as they were in the original data:
> expand(factor(letters))

Levels: c b a
If I use rep(factor(letters)), it does not use the levels in the original data:
> rep(factor(letters), each = 3)
[1] a a a
Levels: a b c
I was able to get the effect I wanted with this, but it seems like there must be a more straightforward way:
> rep(factor(letters), each = 3)
[1] a a a b c
Levels: c a b b c
Anybody know of a way to get the output above?

You can call rep() with any level:
rep(factor(letters), levels=levels(factor(letters)))

Or with unlist() you don’t need to make a copy:
unlist(rep(factor(letters), levels=levels(factor(letters))))
