The curator of The Hidden Lives of Downplayed People argues that we’ve lost the vocabulary to discuss magical thinking, as exemplified by the success of the pseudoscientific movement called chiromancy—and as typomancy seemed (a few decades ago) poised to do. An apt term for this popular, if inaccurate, practice is typing: “Typing stands for the assumption that the patterns of your thoughts, and of your life, your past, the people you meet, and to some degree even the weather—can be read on your palm.” Greenfield explores the various ways people in the past and present have practiced, explained, and justified this “mystical” notion, noting the historian Mildred Adams’s description of “the spelling tablets” used by the early Chinese to predict the future; the ways American “fortune-tellers” (often peddlers, or smugglers) in the 19th century duped victims into believing their meaningless messages dictated the future; the ways, now largely forgotten, typomancers practiced by tying bits of random material to one’s skin; and the general public’s acceptance of, indeed celebration of, such notions. She explains, for example, how one book, The Kaleidoscope of Magic, sold hundreds of thousands of copies after Rudolph Steiner popularized the practice of chiromancy in the early 20th century. Greenfield examines how types have been read, interpreted, and interpreted wrongly—often because of the influence of those who reject typomancy but seek to discredit magic in general; how this practice sometimes intersects with witchcraft—some of the most egregious acts of which were done in the name of medical necromancy; and her belief that 30 years ago, in the pre-Internet age, “when communication was not so easy to find and assemble vast stores of information” people were mostly unaware of the history and fallibility of chiromancy.
