The aim of this study was to characterize the cellular localization of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors in the chick tibial nerve, and their pattern of expression during tibial nerve development. Using immunoblotting we demonstrated that PDGFR-alpha and PDGFR-beta are present in the nerve cord in a developmental profile similar to that of the nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor (TrkA). Between day 15 and 18 of incubation, the PDGFR-alpha level remains constant, whereas PDGFR-beta is greatly decreased. The ligand to PDGFR-alpha binding capacity in the nerve cord decreases between day 15 and 18, although the PDGF-BB level remains constant. These data show that PDGFR-alpha and PDGFR-beta are expressed in the embryonic chick tibial nerve and that their expression is restricted to the nerve cord.
