Large animals, such as dogs and cats, are very clean animals and should be kept clean. To achieve this, cats and dogs should have access to an area in which they can defecate and/or urinate.
While nature has provided cats and dogs with a variety of materials with which to accomplish this, such as soil, sand, bark, leaves, grass and other items that are usually plentiful in the local environment, there are several problems with using such materials.
First, use of these materials may pose a danger to the health of the animal. For example, a scoop of soil which has passed through an animal””s intestinal tract is known to carry pathogenic bacteria. Further, sand and soil which have been ingested by an animal is known to lodge in its stomach or digestive tract, causing various disturbances including gastric upset and/or infection. Leaves, grass and other plant material which are ingested by the animal carry various diseases, such as worms, which may eventually be passed to a human in contact with the animal.
Another problem with using natural materials to litter is that, when the material is used as a substrate for the material, it must be continually replaced, if not every few days at least several times a week. Replacement of natural materials requires the owner to make an effort, which may become too burdensome for some owners. Further, the use of natural materials may pose a fire danger to a building upon which the animal defecates or urinates.
Accordingly, a need exists for a device that is relatively inexpensive, safe and convenient for use in providing an area for an animal to defecate or urinate, and which does not carry the same problems associated with natural materials such as soil, sand, bark, leaves, grass and other items that are usually plentiful in the local environment.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a cat litter box that is capable of using granular or powdered litter and which does not pose a fire hazard.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a cat litter box which is relatively easy to use and to maintain.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a cat litter box that is versatile.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a cat litter box which is relatively inexpensive.
