The present invention relates to an LED lighting apparatus which has a plurality of light sources and provided with a plurality of LED chips mounted on a circuit board, as a vehicle lamp which emits light of desired light distribution pattern or a vehicle tail lamp provided with a reflector.
2. Description of the Related Art
An LED lighting apparatus has been generally used as a vehicle lamp or a vehicle tail lamp. The vehicle lamp (head lamp) emits light of forward lighting pattern required by law. It is normally provided with, in addition to the LED lighting apparatus, an LED light source in the form of an LED chip mounted on a circuit board and an optical conversion element such as a reflector. The vehicle tail lamp emits light for indicating rearward movement of a vehicle. It is normally provided with, in addition to the LED lighting apparatus, a light source in the form of a filament.
FIG. 10 is a sectional view of an example of a related-art lighting apparatus of this type. In this lighting apparatus, a pair of LED chips 1601 and 1602 are mounted on a circuit board 1603 by reflow soldering. Then, a reflector 1604 is mounted. The configuration including the LED chips 1601 and 1602, the circuit board 1603, and the reflector 1604 is exposed in air without any seal material. Therefore, water is attached to the surface of the lighting apparatus, and a problem exists in that a short circuit may occur between the LED chips 1601 and 1602 due to salt water, and that light of poor quality may be emitted.
To solve such problems, a lighting apparatus as shown in FIG. 11 has been proposed which is provided with a seal material 1605 covering the surface of the lighting apparatus and preventing the intrusion of water.
However, if only the lighting apparatus having such a configuration is enclosed in a housing, water intrudes via gaps between the housing and the sealing material 1605. Then, a problem arises in that the reflector 1604 and/or the circuit board 1603 may be partially corroded. To solve this problem, an attempt is made in which the lighting apparatus having a protruded portion 1607 and inserted in a housing is configured as shown in FIG. 12.

2. Description of the Prior Art
For many years, lamps such as neon lamps and incandescent lamps have been used in a variety of applications, such as signs, atrium lighting, fixtures, and architectural lighting fixtures. Recently, it has been discovered that certain types of fluorescents (a bulb which is a mercury discharge lamp) have been found to have some advantages over the more traditional incandescent lamp. For instance, the fluorescent lamp does not generate the amount of heat that is generated by the incandescent lamp, so the general area of the lighting fixture in which a fluorescent lamp is used may be kept at an elevated temperature and more easily kept at a precise temperature. In addition, the voltage needed to start the fluorescent lamp is significantly lower than that which is required to start the more traditional type of incandescent lamp.
When a fluorescent lamp is used in an area in which its brightness must vary, it is quite typical for the fluorescent lamp to include a dimming circuit. An example of a particularly sophisticated dimmer circuit is illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 4,650,897 by Gerth. In this patent, the fluorescent lamp is connected to a control circuit which in turn is connected to a variable transformer. The output winding of the transformer, which is connected to the input winding of the transformer, varies the current which is supplied to the lamp thereby dimming the lamp.
