A retrospective study was carried out to assess the present status of mutilation surgery in the tropical regions of the USSR. A total of 42 mutilation procedures were examined. The operations were performed on children from 0 to 5 years (n = 19), adult patients (n = 20) and adults with children (n = 3). In 80.9% of all cases, the defect was a result of injuries inflicted in traffic accidents. The majority of injuries were due to road traffic accidents (69.2%), followed by suicides (15.2%), fires (7.1%) and penetrations (6.5%). In 6.5% of all cases, the mutilation was a product of perforations of the brain by bullets from shooting accidents, and in 6.5% the defect was due to congenital malformations. The authors discuss the causes and therapeutic aspects of mutilation surgery, as well as the importance of national campaigns for the prevention of road traffic and falls in children.id: dsq-747525653
