“I want to get some answers,” said Patricia Yella, who says she gave permission for her son’s tissue to be used in genetic tests following his May 2010 death.
“I want to understand why he was dying. Why did he die? Why did he die so young?” she said.
When her son, Michael Yella, died at the age of 34, doctors said he had died from heart disease.
However, Yella’s younger brother, Lawrence, who says he was the first to notice that Michael was showing severe symptoms, says he believes that his brother had leukemia and that he died because his immune system had been weakened.
“My brother was sick, and they said he died because of heart disease, but they didn’t tell us the whole story,” said Lawrence Yella. “My brother had problems for a long time and even asked our mom to send him to the doctor for tests,” he added.
After Patricia Yella approached the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in November 2011, the society discovered the truth – that her son had cancer, but in its advanced stages.
“The corporation pleaded guilty, not guilty, guilty, guilty,” said Lawrence Yella, noting that, in its statement, the corporation told Patricia Yella that her son died from leukemia.
However, as the society, which runs the Addington municipal animal shelter, admits that the deceased was suffering from cancer, it suggests that the family should not receive compensation.
Ontario’s Superior Court ruled against the family, saying that the corporation was not responsible for failing to detect that Michael Yella had cancer. It dismissed the Yellas’ claim.
“They told us that the life of our boy was worth less than a dime,” said Lawrence Yella.
