The oldest and most popular type of SaaS are cloud-based applications.
There are other types of SaaS:
One-time software purchase “The software product is sold on a one-time, or one-off, basis, i.e. the software is acquired, installed and configured on the user’s computer, but is not licensed to the user. The user typically obtains the license by purchasing the software from the vendor’s storefront and installing it on their computer.” – Wikipedia’s entry on SaaS
The other types of SaaS are not cloud-based but are commonly called “Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).”
An Open Source Software-as-a-Service (OSSaaS) is an online service that provides free software.
