AutoCAD was introduced in December 1982 and sold as a desktop application that ran on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Autodesk developed and released the first Autodesk C++ application programming interface (API) for AutoCAD in 1986. It was a programming language for hardware acceleration of graphics routines.
The original name of the product was “AutoCAD-81”, and it was available for Apple II, IBM PC, and Commodore 64 computers. In 1988, an upgrade of the product for the IBM PC, the Autodesk C++-80, was released. In 1988, Autodesk released AutoCAD version 2.0 for the first time. In 1989, AutoCAD software was first available on the Apple Macintosh computer, and was released for the Apple II computer in 1991.
Autodesk and the PTC Software Group released AutoCAD version 2.5 in 1991. Autodesk acquired the product development company PTC, Inc. in 1996. The company also acquired the company Severn Valley CAM, Inc. in 1998.
The latest AutoCAD software release, AutoCAD 2019, was released in September 2019.
