UK government considers face-recognition device to track riots
LONDON – A British government document seen by The Associated Press says the government is considering using “any tool available” to keep track of rioters and protect the police.
AP reports that the document, published in Parliament on Thursday, says “a new tool is needed to help officers and intelligence officers protect the public, and catch those who use social media to encourage violence.”
The document says the government wants to “build an evidence database” of those identified in images or video taken of rioters, and then cross reference that data with information collected by police and security services.
The government is also considering creating a national online database that links “any person known to police or security services with any piece of online content that can identify them.”
