History
The earliest forms of CAD software were vector graphics editors that were used for wireframing and computer-aided design of mechanical drawings.
The first commercially released CAD software was released in the United Kingdom in the mid-1970s by the Systems Design Group (SDG), who sold the software under the brand name MicroPlanner. The MicroPlanner software allowed designers to create vector graphics and mechanical drawings for microcomputers and large-scale minicomputers using an internal graphics display, keyboard, mouse and printer. The British and US versions were designed for DEC PDP-11 computers, with the UK version ported to the Acorn BBC Micro computer.
The first CAD software released for computers with video displays was the Xerox Alto’s Page-Plotter, and the software was released in 1981.
The first commercial CAD program for microcomputers was Vector Vision by Siemens and TI in 1978. With the introduction of the PC in 1981, several companies released similar desktop-based programs for creating mechanical drawings. One of the earliest was Omnis by Lantek. Another desktop CAD program was released in 1980, for the Apple II series of computers by Numerical Technologies. In the US, Computer Drafting Company (CDC) released two versions of their CAD system, CAD-1 for the Apple II and CAD-2 for the IBM PC, in 1980. Computer Drafting Company was later acquired by Peter Gander, who would later create the first significant CAD software application that was designed to run on a wide variety of platforms. In the UK, Datatrace was released as a sub-brand of Firsttec in 1982, and in 1983 Dataplan was formed, with Dataplan being the successor to Firsttec’s Datatrace.
AutoCAD came to market in the US in December 1982, on the Intel 8088 based 8088 PC, replacing the CDC System 20, and was renamed AutoCAD soon afterwards. AutoCAD provided a combination of drafting features and on-screen navigation that could be performed using a standard PC keyboard.
As the 1980s progressed, software development efforts focused on applications that could run on personal computers with video displays, including CAD, electronic design automation, computational geometry, and software engineering. The 1980s also saw the commercial release of the first office productivity software suites, which included various CAD applications.
