AutoCAD is Autodesk’s flagship commercial software product. Autodesk Autodesk was founded in the late 1950s by John Walker, who was the first to develop computer-aided design (CAD) software. One of John Walker’s early ideas was to provide access to CAD by providing a program that is easily configured for use in one or more geographic locations. To that end, Walker designed a program to run on microcomputers. The original name of this software product was DWG (Delineation With Graphics). Autodesk acquired John Walker’s development company, A-Team, and its DWG CAD software product in the mid-1980s. The name of the DWG CAD product was changed to AutoCAD, and the first release of AutoCAD, version 1.0, was in December 1982.
AutoCAD is sold as part of the Autodesk product line, which also includes software titles such as AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Civil, AutoCAD Architectural, AutoCAD Electrical LT, AutoCAD Mechanical LT, and AutoCAD Structural. AutoCAD LT (low-cost AutoCAD) was introduced in 1994 as a direct competitor to CAD programs such as Solidworks.
The product line has expanded to also include mobile and web-based applications. AutoCAD Mobile allows designers and drafters to use an iPhone, iPad, or Android device to access a range of industry-specific software, including the AutoCAD product.

AutoCAD is designed to run on any microcomputer running DOS, Windows, or Mac OS. The product also includes the Autodesk Graphics Exchange Server (AGES), which is designed to allow all AutoCAD users to work with a common set of files. This is achieved by using a server program that locks a specific file or folder to the user that works on that file. In some cases, files in the common set can be shared among multiple users at the same time. Users can work on a file while sharing the file with other users.
