Original and Release History

Autodesk introduced AutoCAD on a diskette for the Apple II in 1982. One of the main advantages was to allow CAD operators to work simultaneously at a number of terminals and to be able to move drawings between terminals. In 1982, only the Apple II could display objects at a resolution higher than 72 dots per inch (dpi). The Apple II could not process objects larger than 1024×768.

In 1985, the 256K Apple II (AVR) with a 10-MHz Motorola 68020 CPU replaced the Apple II Plus. It is the first version of AutoCAD to have a resolution of 1200 dpi.

In 1986, the Apple IIGS and the Apple IIc were introduced. The Apple IIGS has a Motorola 68030 CPU and supports 15-bit color graphics (24-bit color became a standard in 1992). The Apple IIc has an 8088 CPU and a 4-MHz Intel 80C51 CPU. The Apple IIc does not support color graphics. The 1200 dpi resolution and 256K (255K used for memory) became the standard resolution of AutoCAD.

In 1988, the Apple IIe became the standard computer used in the AutoCAD workspace. By the end of that year, the Apple II, the IIc, the IIGS and the IIe were discontinued.
