Bundy, a university student in the early 1970s, was convicted in 1978 of killing two women and a male hitchhiker in separate attacks in 1974 in the Washington state town of Missoula.
The first was of 20-year-old Elizabeth Kendall, whom he raped and bludgeoned to death with a tire iron on 15 November 1974.
The second was of university student Megan Kanka, who was six years old when she was raped and strangled with a phone cord on 1 May 1974.
The Missoula County jury that convicted Bundy of the Kanka murder was told of the earlier attack.
The trial judge, Joseph Littlejohn, had not allowed the mention of the attack on Kendall.
Bundy, now 60, served 33 years in prison before being paroled in 2001 after an appeal based in part on evidence that he had killed other women. The cases against him are now barred by the statute of limitations.
But Bundy has served long enough in prison to make his death sentence legally possible.
“The government is now saying they will execute him next week,” Bundy’s lawyer, Harlan Fiske, told the Wall Street Journal. “At this point in time, his death warrant is signed.”
The paper reported that the decision would be announced by Montana officials at 5pm on Friday.
