To study the use of complementary medicine in primary care patients and to identify the influencing factors. A cross-sectional survey was used. All primary care patients of a university family practice were interviewed. The questionnaire contained questions about socio-demographic variables, reason for choosing complementary medicine and the way in which the physicians had reacted to the use of complementary medicine. Two hundred and twenty-four patients (56% female, average age 47 years) of the GP practices participating in the study answered the questionnaire. The average consultation duration was 7 minutes. The use of complementary medicine among the patients was 8.4%. Significant influencing factors were: complementary medicine as the first choice of the patient (OR = 3.4; 95% CI 1.5-7.7), dissatisfaction with the care received from the physician (OR = 2.5; 95% CI 1.3-4.7) and an increased burden of disease (OR = 2.6; 95% CI 1.2-5.5). Patients who initially chose a complementary medicine as the first treatment option were significantly more likely to choose more than one complementary medicine (OR = 2.1; 95% CI 1.3-3.4) and to continue to choose complementary medicine as an option for the treatment of chronic disease (OR = 2.3; 95% CI 1.3-3.9). Only a small proportion of the patients reported that they had received any information about complementary medicine from their GP.
