From the Israelites’ perspective, this year of Rosh Hashanah is the year of freedom, the year of liberation. For thousands of years, the Hebrew calendar has been based on the lunar calendar and marked by the fixed calendar observances of the Passover, the Feast of Weeks and the Festival of Trumpets, among others. Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on the 15th day of the month of Nisan, the month of the Exodus. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur both occur in the first two weeks of the month of Nisan, and Yom Kippur falls on the 10th of the month.
The 10th of the month of Nisan is commonly known as the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur. The Bible (Leviticus 16) teaches that on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would go into the Most Holy Place. In the Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 23:4), we read that the high priest would seek forgiveness for all the nation. The place of his prayer was the Temple, so he would not ask God on behalf of the nation, but on behalf of the individual.
The Bible tells us that the Yom Kippur is marked by a cessation of festivals and sacrifices for 20 days, and by the absence of the high priest in the Temple. The Torah also teaches that during this time, sins are forgiven by God:
There shall no one make a solemn assembly, a new moon festival,
