To determine whether glutathione peroxidase (GPx) could be one of the important ROS-detoxifying enzymes and to assess whether the hyperplastic cell population responds to the increased ROS production, the effect of 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB), a potent inducer of ROS, on GPx, selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GPx) and on glutathione transferase (GST) activities in the liver of rats was studied. The GPx activity in the male rats treated with TCB (1.0 mg/kg, once a week for 5 weeks) was lower than the control values (0.65-1.06 mU/mg protein) and that of Se-GPx was also decreased in the liver of TCB-treated rats.
