A review of 66 patients with acute hepatic abscess was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous abscess drainage in treating acute hepatic abscess (AHAs). The results showed that most of the patients are misdiagnosed and HAs should be borne in mind in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain. The diagnosis of HAs was highly consistent with clinical signs, computer tomography (CT) and ultrasonography. Patients with chronic liver disease were excluded from the study. Fifty-five patients received first time treatment by percutaneous abscess drainage and antibiotic therapy. The infection was cured in all cases. The successful rate was 73.6%. Only one patient experienced recurrence and died.
