The purpose of the program is to prepare trainees for careers in academia, government, or the pharmaceutical industry. This program continues to attract strong applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and career paths. The curriculum is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of basic mechanisms of cellular and molecular pharmacology, signaling pathways, pharmacology, and therapeutic targeting. All trainees are required to complete core courses in Cell and Molecular Pharmacology and Pharmacology and special courses in target validation, translational research, as well as courses in bioethics. In the course of their training, trainees conduct laboratory studies to understand the mechanisms and therapeutic modulation of the signaling pathways involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory, neuropathic, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. It is the goal of this training program to provide opportunities for trainees to become established researchers in the field of cellular and molecular pharmacology. As in the past, this training program will also provide opportunities for trainees to undertake clinical rotations and participate in research projects in both the basic science and clinical arenas. Over the history of this grant, the training program has been structured to allow trainees to pursue a variety of fellowships in addition to their doctoral training. During the most recent funding period, 46% of the Training Grant?s PhD graduates and approximately 30% of the postdoctoral fellows have received fellowships from the NIH. Past and current trainees have a high rate of publication in peer reviewed journals and are members of a highly interactive, multi-disciplinary research community. The program is designed to promote the scholarly and professional growth of its trainees. Trainees are evaluated every four years by an independent outside committee and at the conclusion of training by an Advisory Committee that assesses each trainee?s progression toward individual career goals and departmental and institution goals.
