Former congressman and state legislator Gene Green died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday, September 5, 2017. Born in Beaumont, Texas, on September 5, 1932, Gene was the oldest serving member of the Texas delegation in Congress at the time of his death. For nearly 50 years, Gene dedicated his life to public service in both his hometown and Washington, D.C.

Always a conservative and a champion of his community, Gene moved from law enforcement to public service to becoming a state senator and, eventually, a member of Congress. As a freshman member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gene was one of the first to vote against the bill that would establish Medicaid. Gene served in the House from 1977-1989.

A letter was read from the lifelong friend of the family, Ina Green, saying:

“Gene passed away Sunday afternoon at the White House surrounded by his family. He took his last breath at 5:11 p.m. He made a lasting impression on the world as a world-class orator, a fighter for family values and for the sovereignty of Texas and the Border.

“As a young child, Gene loved the theater. He dreamed of becoming a star on the stage. His prodigious talent as a son, brother, husband, father, son-in-law, friend, co-worker and state senator was unmatched.

“Gene loved his family, his friends, his neighbors and the people he represented in the Texas Legislature.

“I know when I say that he truly loved the people. For those of you who were there, he would smile, he would joke and he would be, and I can only say this now, unselfish.

“He truly wanted to serve others.

“As he said all of his life, ‘I knew it was time to run when people started paying more attention to me.’

“I know that you will carry on his great legacy as a public
