But, even with these changes, Spud remains its core audience firmly in mind. Like Spud, Spud 2 presents you with a comedic view of life in the 1980s, through the eyes of a socially awkward teen. The difference here is, that younger character role is far more important this time around. It allows Troye Sivan to really take centre stage, and the result is a fun ride for both kids and adults.
Speaking of being in the limelight, we wont delve further into the relationship that is developing between Spud and The Guy; suffice it to say that this is now a stable, strong, romantic relationship. John Cleese has never been better as of course he hasn’t. Whilst the Guy’s character has expanded and developed, and now features a bit more depth and substance, his relationship with Spud has been somewhat reduced. We now only get to see the blokes together when they ‘work together’ – and even then, it’s not always clear what they’re discussing.
The less we see of Spuds relationship, the better. It’s clear from the early introduction that the guy is now very much a romantic interest – but that doesn’t really come across as Spud has never really been invested in these developments (the whole ‘boyfriend’ tag still rings quite hollow, not that Spud will realise it anytime soon).
In contrast to the more reserved relationship that The Guy has with Spud, we get to see far more of The Guv’s ups and downs, and his inability to cope with the situation that has befallen him and his family.
In fact, I think Spud 2 really shows the Guv at his worst, more than any other installment. His mindset is one of complete despair; he feels as though he is living in a dream, that everything is wrong, and that he must somehow free himself from the situation that he feels is overwhelming him. And yet, on top of all of this, The Guv still has to stand for re-election as the Grand Master of Broadcasting; he doesn’t seem to care about anything at all.
ahem, ahem. its spud 2 the madness, so theres no real need to get too technical here. suffice to say, its the spud you know and love, with plenty of references to the original trilogy. cleese does an excellent job of being the eccentric, and ruygrok has a great time with the more silly aspects of the book. sivan is completely different from his first movie appearance, and he plays it extremely well. the movie feels like a collection of sketches rather than a serious attempt to make a film, which is exactly what spud was. you have to watch the movies to understand why i love them so much, but if you cant find the time to do that, then its unlikely youll find the time to watch this one.
the movies are never short on humour, and make up a good chunk of the running time. the comedy is fast paced, but the jokes are all as much fun as the original. i am a sucker for the humour that has been around since the first film, and the spud series is no exception. the movies are fun, and if you have not seen them, they are a great way to get to know spud once more.
