Well, depends on what youre looking for. The Big Ben is an excellent boost and distortion pedal that has the ability to fake all of the sounds youre referring to. If youre looking for a single distortion pedal, check out the Boss BD2 which is based on the Big Ben. For small rigs, I dont think you need anything more than the Big Ben and BD2. The BD2 is a great pedal for the Blues Driver and it has a very simple but effective bypass circuit that allows you to dial in all of the tones youre looking for and still use the pedal to do its job. The coloursound powerboost and tube driver are also great overdrive pedals for the blues and complements perfectly the BD2. Theyre basically Bright on steroids. If youre looking for a pedal which is a bit more transparent though, then youll want something a bit more vintage. I would go for the TOT 2, the PSR2 or the Slide Meister. Bjorn]

Well, youre asking so many question at once that Im not sure I can answer them all completely. To start, the Blues Driver is indeed a great pedal for my small rig (and obviously a lot more as well) and I really cant wait to get the Blues Driver! I wouldnt have to get anything more except a distortion pedal if I had the BD2. Haha.
The BD2 is a great pedal for the blues. But it might not be the most transparent pedal in the world so you might want to check out the coloursound or slide meister. I would also pick up a free tone control switch. You can use it for putting some kind of valve in any preset or set it as is. And the way it works is that you can also tap the cutoff frequency for the mid boost that will put a bit of a crunch, but only in the mid range. Then you can also tap the top boost which will add some kind of a crunch to the top end. This lets you dial in a great tone for every different blues. My favorite setting is to use the free tone control for bottom and top boosts in the mid frequency range to create a crunch that works great for every different blues. I also have a tone control for the middle boost which I use for adding some subtle but different crunch, but I tend to use the top boost. Then I have a free tone control for middle boost so that I can add some even less subtle crunch which is perfect for those blues with some extra chords like the C Sharp. I also sometimes use the free tone control for the top boost to add some more mid boost which adds some more distortion. A free tone control in the middle boost is also good for tone shaping as you arent boosting the mids and therefore you dont need it to be as bright. I also have a tone control for the bottom boost (without it I get a boom) and a tone control for the middle boost (these are the ones I described above) so that I can shape the sound with the right amount of crunch. A tone control for the middle boost creates more distortion in the mid range. I have also a tone control for the top boost but I almost never use that one. The free tone control allows you to dial in distortion from clean to crispy. All this said, maybe you want to try the coloursound or slide meister first. I would recommend them for a real quick boost of 2dB or so and then a distortion pedal (please dont do the cheap slide meister, it sucks).

[Check out our Apparel for the RV8 (located in the top right of the website). Big Ben RV8 is one of Pinnacle’s stable of top of the line overdrive stompboxes that range from hard hitting Blues and high gain tones to straight forward rockabilly and soul rocking rigs. Big Ben RV8’s (Roland V-series) have a gigantic voice with plenty of excellent swappable single and dual effects with more than enough tone shaping capability to cover any and all needs. Bjorn]
AoR (audiophile on record): A Foobar example by Fernando Andresen: We are in the Tube-Driver range and, after trying out some of the highest-quality, shop-bought models, we decided that we liked the different sound of analog: – more presence; – less midrange; – brighter and sweeter treble; – the sound is very resonant; – with a very low center frequency, you get a very natural sound. On the other hand, if you’re interested in distortion, we recommend you to download the app on your smartphone and choose a distortion preset, such as: – tube; – valve; – saturation; – crunch; – shout; If you don’t find a preset you like, feel free to create one or use a combination of presets. The good thing about Foobar is that it’s built in the app, so you don’t need to worry about installing any plugins. In the example below, I created a distortion preset based on the valve distortion preset with the Tube and Valve presets added. As you can see, it doesn’t sound as loud as our tube-amp distortion. It’s normal. In the Tube presets, the valve presets were used, and in the Valve presets, the tube presets were used.
