The film is unique in many ways. Prakash Raj, who is currently busy with his other directorial venture SHOT, is not a stalwart of the Tamil film industry. His name in that field has not been featured once in over two decades. Yet, while BUMM BUMM BOLE has a few interesting sequences, Prakash’s entry into the film doesn’t make up for the total incoherence of the tale.
BUMM BUMM BOLE is not a bad film. It’s just a muddle of a film. It is boring, slow and has a haphazard plot. Personally, I don’t think Akshay Kumar should have agreed to sign this film which has no idea what it wants to be. Only a good sense of direction from the director or a good script can rectify it. The only thing that has made this film noteworthy, is the racy song on the kids. The other portions of the film are pedestrian and dull. Maybe some editing will help this.
When it comes to crowd pleasing films, BUMM BUMM BOLE is a disappointment. It doesn’t have any tugs on the heartstrings. The situations are everyday circumstances. There’s nothing gratuitous or vulgar. As a result, I have no incentive to revisit this film. The film has to be seen. But it won’t make any lasting impact.
Thanks to its extensive worldwide release, BUMM BUMM BOLE has received the kind of media coverage that is usually reserved for films with international certification, an indication that it has far-reaching appeal. The film was based on the book of the same name written by Naseeruddin Shah and Asif Kapadia.
BUMM BUMM BOLE won many accolades. One of the best was the National Film Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for Rituparna Sengupta, who created life on the screen with her brilliant portrayal of a long-suffering, overweight housewife in a family of four children. The ‘naughty girl’ that Priyadarshan dreams up in BUMM BUMM BOLE is a most artistic creation. She comes in the guise of a young girl only in her lover’s fantasies, but Priyadarshan, as usual, throws in a few references to the Kama Sutra for the benefit of the high-minded – and the high-born – film buffs among us. Although the film is based on the novel, the director manages to keep the different levels of characters’ emotions intact. The suspense element works well and keeps the audience guessing from the first frame to the very last frame. You can figure out the ending from the opening frame. The only let-down is poor music, which is quite sporadic. There are several good songs, but it would have been great to see them all reproduced in one song.
The director has a talent for coming up with wacky ideas like this. The film, obviously, is written for the experimentally minded. It will entertain you to know that this is a film made to be viewed in a single large screen. It is surely an example of what we can do with technology!
