the level of stiffness can be increased further by making the spring rate more linear or variable. this can be achieved by using multi-piece coil springs with an external spiral spring, or by using coil springs with a smooth internal surface that can be pre-stressed in a linear fashion to increase the overall spring rate at the bottom of the travel. this can be done with just one piece of coil spring or a combination of two or more springs.

i bought the wheel in a very similar condition to the car. it needed a set of new inner and outer tyres, an overhaul, new adjustable pedals and a new seat, but had an original centre console and wiring harness. with the exception of an srs front control arm bushing, the steering was in very good condition. the wheel had an original rubber-mounting plate and bushings, but the outer rim was worn badly and the inner rim was in very bad condition. the bushings were a bit rough, but not touching. i couldn’t find anywhere else to buy a replacement set of bushings in good condition, and i wanted to retain the original rust-free condition. i had the bushings changed in the usa by a competent specialist who will replace all the bushings for the original caster and camber adjustment. i then replaced the original rubber mounting plate and bushings and drilled and tapped the existing bushings. the car now feels very solid and stable, but the new bushings are a bit stiffer than the old ones. all the other parts of the wheel and wheel hub were in excellent condition.

kingpin angles are important. it is important that the cars steering box be mounted in a position that keeps the steering box on centre. this is usually achieved by offsetting the steering box relative to the centreline of the car. it is also important that the steering arm that connects the steering box and steering wheel be situated high enough up the car that the steering box does not have to be offset in order to achieve the desired position for the steering box. this is generally achieved by having a longer steering arm. kingpin angles are also important because the kingpin axis is the centre of rotation for the steering system and if the kingpin angle is too close to vertical or too large an angle, the steering system will feel tight. for these reasons, steering angle and the angle of the steering axis should be as close as possible to the manufacturer’s specification. i set the original steering angle at 23 degrees, then i raised the kingpin angle to 26 degrees. i measured all this in the car using a string and a carpenter’s level. i then set my steering rack to 26 degrees and measured the distance from the bottom of the rack to the steering wheel mounting location in the car. this distance was exactly 2 inches and i set the steering rack at that height. i then measured the distance from the steering rack to the end of the steering arm. this was approximately 3 inches and i raised the steering rack to that height. this modified height should be sufficient to keep the steering box on centre. i then set my steering arms at the new height.
