The Ultimate Sampling Bank includes 24 MPC and Juno presets. These are built to inspire exploration of the Juno 6 and MPC, to explore their production features and workflow, or to experiment with deep and layered sampling techniques. This bank focuses on the mapping and exploration of synth samples and has been designed and built to be straightforward, open and creative.
The original bank was developed for MPC NOVA. It contains over 220 custom designed sounds covering a broad range of styles including chiptune, drum & bass, electro, jazz, noise, indie rock, metal, modal synth, sound design, and textures. The sounds are carefully sequenced and are cross-compatible with all major DAWs as well as NI MPC and MSP versions. This bank also includes 2 custom synthesizer instruments to inspire exploration of synthesis and deep sampling techniques.
The VMK1 bank of presets features six synthesizers and three microphones for creating authentic and futuristic sounds. The bank comes with processing tailored for each instrument, including a variety of effects and some audio mastering options.
From a single virtual synth (or from live performing) you can then go to the Flexi-section and create your own instrument patches. This is where the real value of PSP comes into play. Within each patch, you can build your own banks of effects, as well as use the onboard effects. Because PSP is based on a real sequencer, it makes the sequencing of patches easy. And because it’s a virtual sampler, it means that each effect included in a patch can be run or edited without affecting all other patches. Which means that you can tweak a synth patch at the sound-generation stage without ruining the overall sound, then go back later and play with the individual parameters.
what i really liked about the psp preset library is its inclusion of complete orchestral instruments. the strings section contains some gorgeous and inspiring string sounds, and the range of brass is also outstanding. there are some synth and bass parts too, but these are more for reference than inspiration.
so, is psp the solution to our impasse? the verdict is yes. i like it very much, but i’m not so keen on the intro screen and its ‘find your sound’ metaphor. still, this is an enormously useful (and affordable) addition to uvi’s library of instruments. it’s fast, intuitive, versatile and comes with a complete set of presets that give the instrument instant credibility. i’d especially recommend it to users who are already familiar with uvi’s instrument collection.
are you a uvi owner and looking for something new to add to your collection? try this. it’s an excellent accompaniment to any of uvi’s other synths and is a must-have for any of uvi’s new user. plus, it’s reasonably priced at just $39.99. i do wish that uvi would adopt an intuitive and open approach to the style of sounds they produce, and i hope this product is the first of many that offers such a quality range of samples. in my opinion, uvi products are one of the best and most affordable synths available for the mac, and this new instrument is no exception.
percussion is a category with the most extensive arsenal, even though there is a great deal of overlap between the categories of snare, tom, and cymbals. the percussion category includes all the sounds from the drums and percussion category plus a host of unique samples, both electronic and acoustic, and a number of dedicated percussion kits, including a collection of chimes, a set of tabla, a set of glockenspiel samples, and more. the snare samples, in particular, are very useful and it’s no surprise to find them in so many of the other sound categories as well. the category includes a number of well-known classic drum kits, such as, the ludwig, sabian, zildjian and, of course, akai. there’s also a large selection of electronic drum kits, including a wide range of modular systems such as the old roland and korg systems. one of the nice things about world of synthesizers is that, although the majority of the sounds are synthetic, many of the drum samples and percussive samples (whether acoustic or electronic) are non-electronic, as well as being fully playable with the provided demo software.
