In the mid-late 90s, AudioPCI became one of the most popular sound cards on the market. The fact that it was stable, cheap, and DOS-compatible made it popular with older arcade systems. But, since it was designed purely for entertainment, not with performance in mind, the AudioPCI’s lack of audio quality meant that it would not be used in many real-world applications, which made it soon obsolete. Manufacturers started chugging out support for it, the last being a ‘Win 98’ driver for the ECS Sound Blaster Live!. The driver only supported the AdLib wavetable for sound generation, and was unable to output more than two channels of audio on the card.
In 2001, when Creative released the ‘Sound Blaster Live!’ series of SoundBlaster cards, they decided to follow the strategy of capturing the old AudioPCI driver and plugging it into the SoundBlaster Live! configuration. This driver was included in the update files with the SoundBlaster Live! cards.
In March 2003, Ensoniq terminated the AudioPCI driver project and announced that there would be no further updates. If you were lucky, your SoundBlaster Live! configuration might still be running this driver in some form. If not, you’d have to jump on the Creative bandwagon to get sound in your games (although be sure to let em know about your stance on the Creative Card cartridge – MS are so kind, they won’t sell old carts to people without Creative licenses).
Although it’s not supported by Creative, it’s supported by VMWare and RealTek. The latter provides support for onboard and PCI audio and this is supported in VMWare ESXi. the es1380 had 2 soundsamples per sound channel, and supported 2 stereo and 2 5.1 channels of audio. the cd-rom and midi drivers could also be used in tandem, so that the cd-rom interface could be used as a midi interface, and the midi interface could be used as a cd-rom interface. but, the cd-rom interface could not be used as a midi interface, and the midi interface could not be used as a cd-rom interface. if you like, you can use the features of the es1380 as listed above, but the manufacturer does not recommend it.
the es1371 and es1380 were the last versions of ensoniq’s audiopci, and despite these new chips being ac’97 compliant, all the soundscape models released after that time were based on the es1370. audiopci 97 was released in the form of the es1371, which was ensoniq’s first ac’97-compliant chip. the es1371 had the same four subsystems listed above, with the exception of the ‘o’ (output) subsystem, which was not a part of the es1371.
i’ve found some information on the es1370-based cards (es1371, es1372, es1373), including the es1371/7, es1373 and es1372/7 drivers. in particular, the es1371/7 driver supports both the es1372/7 (old/new) and es1373 cards.
the es1373 has a few interesting features. for example, the es1373 can be used as a 5.1-channel card by using some kind of port. what’s strange is that the es1373 is the only card with onboard stereo pre-amplification. the two preamp jacks could be used for any pair of inputs, but only the left jack worked (at least with windows drivers, i haven’t tried other oses). this preamp is very effective, and sounds much better than the later sound blaster live! gold card (5.1) – it doesn’t completely eliminate background hiss, but it certainly mitigates it to a level that isn’t noticeable when the volume is at the maximum.
