ok, this is the number 1 problem you were having. i guess that after all this, youll figure out the logic behind the ft2232d and jtag. i dont use a ft2232d myself. maybe somebody else can help you out. ive read some of your other posts and youve made the same mistakes i made. if you have tried using the ft2232d with the ft232r, then you know what its limitations are. the binary nature of jtag requires you to use a uart-to-jtag converter. these are cheap and plentiful. youre better off using one than using a ft2232d if you have to interface with any kind of a device. the ft2232d is limited to a single target device. the ft232r however can be programmed by a jtag adapter as well as the ft2232d, so you can program both devices at the same time. if you have not used one of these in a while, then a quick google search will give you what you need to know.
according to your message, you have 2 separate ft2232d chips that you need to program. there are also 2 ft2232d chips that work in tandem, with a single jtag adapter. some of the ft2232d chips use an additional converter which essentially functions as a second jtag adapter, but i think that all ft2232d chips work with the ft232r and a jtag adapter.
you have to program the first ft2232d using the ft232r first. then you can program the other ft2232d chip using the ft2232d jtag adapter. the ft2232d has its own dip socket. you need to use a socket on your ft2232d to plug into the ft2232d jtag adapter. i wrote the driver software myself, so i understand its ins and outs. the ft2232d is a clone of the ft232, but the ft232r is a different one. you will have to search for a driver for the ft232r, if you need one.
you can now use a breakout board to communicate with the fpga. the breakout board only provides uart with an rs232 level converter. you can use the fpga to do all the serial communication using the uart interface. the first thing youll need is the rs232 to uart converter. the datasheet for this converter is here. most breakout boards are sold without a converter, but some have them built in. example: > h jtag lpt driver win7 in the meantime, the vhdl code for the library is here, and the c source code is here. note that the library is not meant to be used in a realtime application, as its too slow (for realtime). it is best used to debug your code during development.
i have been looking for a jtag programmer for a while, not so much for making programming easier as for when my eeprom on my atmega chips dies. i have found nothing that works well, but i have found that the atmel programmers have had a lot of problems for me, so i was hoping you could help. i currently have an atmel 1332. i can use this to program the 1284 without a problem. the problem is that the programming speed is ridiculously slow. i have heard that the ft2232 can be programmed in jtag mode using the ftdi drivers, and i dont have any problems programming that way. if you had one to sell, i would be willing to pay for one.
the ftdi drivers provide a good interface to the cpld, but they dont provide any gpio access. youll need to do that by hand. this is easy for just a few pins, but this only gets you so far. if you want to use the full capabilities of the chip, youll have to get some gpios on the cpld. i havent done this yet, but ill update this guide if i find any good solutions to do this.
